Movie tough guy and candidate for California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, boosted his campaign's already hefty star power by hiring screen heartthrob Rob Lowe as an adviser, sources said.
The actor's latest recruitment target emerged after financial wizard Warren Buffett, one of the world's richest men, and former US secretary of state George Schultz signed on as his economic advisers.

Sources close to the Republican star's campaign indicated that he was courting Democrat Lowe, who played an aide to the US president in the hit television series The West Wing, and that he was likely to come on board.

Schwarzenegger's campaign said it was "not commenting publicly" on reports that Lowe, said to be a close friend of the Terminator star's Democrat wife, Maria Shriver, was about to lend him his public support.

But the Los Angeles Times quoted Schwarzenegger aides as saying that Lowe was expected to join the actor's campaign team as an adviser and as a public face for the drive to have him elected governor of California on October 7.

"I've met with Rob and I will be working with him," Bonnie Reiss, another Democrat who joined Schwarzenegger's campaign team as a strategist, told the Times.

The 39-year-old Lowe's representatives were not immediately available for comment.

If he does formally join the "govern-ator's" campaign, Lowe will join a host of other Democrats, including Buffett, coming to the aid of the moderate Republican.

And the Times quoted campaign insiders as saying that the actor was just one of several Hollywood Democrats who had expressed an interest in working with the action film star.

Lowe portrayed idealistic White House aide Sam Seaborn in the hit series The West Wing for three years, until last year.

In real life, he campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis in 1988.

These are Rob's comments about the Governor's Inaugural Ball for Arnold Schwarzenegger. The ball was recently held at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Rob Lowe, who served as the master of ceremonies, introduced Paul Anka as a "true legend" and "amazing songwriter." He then introduced Schwarzenegger, who came out on crutches in an Armani tux, accompanied by Maria.

"I thought it was the best speech I ever heard him do," Lowe said in the lobby of the convention center. "The scope and depth of feelings about bipartisanship and seeking out common middle ground. ... He supersedes and transcends all of the rules for mortals."

"He doesn't need any party. He's the kind of leader that maybe can move California and this country away from the partisanship I think everybody is tired of. ... It almost takes somebody like Arnold to get away with it. His megaphone is so big, his personality is so strong. He's not susceptible to the kind of gravity that party politicians are."

Lowe has known Arnold and Maria for about 10 years and says he's exactly the same.

"That's one of the things I love about him. He's full of life and fun. He doesn't even seem to be tired except for the pesky leg injury."

"I just think he'll do anything to avoid skiing with me," Lowe joked.

Lowe has signed on to the new show Brothers and Sisters, where he will play the junior senator from California: "... I'm here taking notes," he said.
