Rob Lowe will team with Michael Douglas this weekend as the U.S. and Europe vie for victory in the All-Star Cup Golf Tournament, a celebrity version of the Ryder Cup. The lush green valleys of South Wales are set to take on a new lustre this weekend as actors, musicians, and sporting figures from both sides of the pond jet in to participate in a transatlantic golfing challenge.

Local lass Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was born just down the road in Swansea, is joined by singer Ronan Keating, Gavin Henson, Jodie Kidd, and tennis star Boris Becker on the "home" team, while hubby Michael Douglas will be teeing off with the likes of actors Lowe, Haley Joe Osment, Cheech Marin, and musician Kenny G.

The All-Star-Golf Tournament will be played on Sunday, August 28th from 12:00 noon till 6:30 p.m. at the Celtic Manor Resort. It will be aired on SkyOne TV.

GOLF: STARS ATTRACT NEW CROWD TO CELTIC MANOR
IC Wales

The eyes of the golfing world will be trained on Celtic Manor when it hosts the Ryder Cup in five years' time, but the Newport venue hopes to welcome a whole new audience to the sport this Bank Holiday weekend.

The Ryder Cup is golf's biggest team tournament - and the third largest sporting spectacle after the Olympics and soccer's World Cup in terms of television audience - but this Sunday and Monday sees a golf event with a difference take place over Celtic Manor's Roman Road course.

That's because the competitors are not professional golfers - or even accomplished amateurs. They are instead A-list celebrities including Hollywood actors Rob Lowe, Michael Douglas and Wales' own Catherine Zeta Jones.

And organisers believe that star factor will make the charity competition between teams from Europe and America appeal to new spectators as well as hardened golf fanatics.

"The All Star Cup is bang on what we're trying to create here at the Celtic Manor Resort," said the venue's head of marketing, Gareth Jones. "We're trying to open up golf to a wider audience, and particularly to females and children. People who have perhaps not seen golf as something for them before. They'll be coming to see the stars but, when they see them enjoying golf, they might be persuaded to give it a go themselves."

The differences are obvious, but the All Star Cup has one obvious similarity with the Ryder Cup as teams from Europe and America will be desperate to put one over their opponents.

And while the golf from celebrities like Wales and Lions rugby star Gavin Henson and former Dallas soap actor Patrick Duffy may be less than perfect, they will benefit from some expert advice from non-playing captains and rival stars of the real Ryder Cup, Colin Montgomerie and Mark O'Meara.

There is also every indication that the players will be taking the gathering of points for their respective sides very seriously.

Jones added, "We've had Gavin Henson up here for lessons and Jodie Kidd, the model, has had a couple of rounds on the Roman Road in preparation for the event. From what I've heard, they're all really up for it. Of course, they're also anxious not to make fools of themselves on Sky TV and in front of the crowds."

"But I think the Europe v America, Ryder Cup format has really spiced it up and helped secure such a star-studded field. "I'm sure we're bound to see a few scuffed shots, but that will be part of the fascination for some of the spectators."

"Following tomorrow's day of practice, there will be a gala dinner at Celtic Manor's five-star hotel which will include a charity auction of lots donated by each of the 20 competing celebrities. They include Michael Douglas' notated script from "Disclosure" and a silver cast of the boots worn by Gavin Henson to slot the winning penalty against England in this year's Six Nations.

After that, there will be nowhere left to hide for the celebrities, who will be taken out of their usual sporting or entertainment comfort zones in one of the most unforgiving games known to man.

Good Luck, Rob!
