A PORTRAIT OF ROB robkellyillustration.blogspot.com
January 2, 2009
Lowe was promoting a Christmas-themed TV special he was starring in, and that week the
magazine sent me two subjects ~~ Lowe and actress Jennifer Hudson ~~ because they
didn't know which interview was going to pan out.
I did them both, and while the Hudson one turned out fine, for
whatever reason this one really ended up something inspired.
I wanted to get in the Christmas angle, but didn't want anything with a tree, or Santa, or
anything like that ~~ so I went for something snowy and quiet, which felt
Christmassy to me but not cheesy.
Of course, word came down from the magazine that the Lowe interview was off, Hudson was on. *sigh*
This ended up being one of my all-time favorite pieces I ever did for Time Out, and I put it on my website anyway, I
was too proud of it to let it go to waste!
ROB TAKES THE PLUNGE.....
and discovers how easy it is to bring tech fun to his
family's beach retreat.
Rob recently participated in Celebrity TechOver at PC.com and to quote the man himself,
he's "happy as a clam". And that makes Rob's fans happy as clams as well.
Check out these 2 videos on PC.com to see Rob at his beach house, and to see if he gets
what he really wants ~~ a way to listen to his music while he surfs.
Rob enjoyed Christmas on the beach this year, and everybody who saw him, no doubt
enjoyed Rob on the beach as well.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Rob met up with Santa Claus in December 2004 and all I can say is "Lucky Santa!"
Mr. Claus is also known as Brady White, "Santa to the Stars", in Los Angeles, California.
Here's hoping Rob always gets exactly what he wants! Ho! Ho! Ho!

AT ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER'S BEHEST
ROB LOWE WOOS CHINESE Los Angeles TImes
November 19, 2008
Here in Hollywood, we're all used to the idea that life
imitates art, but in the rest of the world, the discovery of that truism, at
least when it comes to films and TV, is still a source of delight and
fascination.
This week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (no stranger to
this particular phenomenon) enlisted his friend and fellow environmentalist
Rob Lowe to entice the notoriously wary Chinese into a discussion about
global warming while showing them a little showbiz flash.
So the politically savvy Lowe arranged, through ABC, to have seven high level
Chinese government officials ~~ in town for Schwarzenegger's summit on climate
change ~~ attend a Monday morning filming of Brothers & Sisters at the
Standard hotel downtown. (Since the Chinese delegates had arrived in town early,
the governor thought it would be fun to treat them to a "magic Hollywood day"
before the summit got underway Tuesday in Beverly Hills.)
Lowe, an independent voter who campaigned for Schwarzenegger during his gubernatorial
election, was happy to help. He had no problem being the governor's warm-up act,
so to speak. "I thought it was really special that the Chinese were coming,"
Lowe said in an interview, noting that the communist state often turns down
requests to attend such conferences. "It was one of those days it was great to
be in show business."
Coincidentally, the Brothers & Sisters scene
they were filming showed Lowe's character announcing his candidacy for governor
at a large staged news conference. (How's that for a Charlie Kaufmanesque
experience?)
The delegates, who were given their own director's chairs
and headsets, were delighted. (They also told Lowe that they had seen many
episodes of him on The West Wing.) During a break in filming, Lowe went into
diplomat mode. "I told them that we need to bring our countries to the table to
have a dialogue to figure out how we can solve global warming together," said
Lowe, who tools around in a little electric car.
By the time Lowe had
finished his pitch, he could have had the delegation ~~ headed by Gao
Guangsheng, the country's top environmental minister ~~ swearing off planes,
trains and automobiles. There's no one more persuasive than a handsome actor
with a mission.
"They were so lovely," said Lowe, who tried to speak
Chinese to the delegates by recycling some of his lines from Wayne's World.
(They roared with laughter.)
Lowe says he hopes his small effort will
make a difference: Of the 600 delegates attending the summit from around the
world, the involvement of the Chinese is considered key. Without that country's
participation, international efforts to address the environmental crisis could
fail. Only time will tell.
After leaving the Brothers & Sisters
set, the group went off to Universal Studios, where it was treated to a ride on
Terminator 2: 3D. Talk about a hard sell.
ROB LOWE TALKS ABOUT
CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES OK Magazine
November 18, 2008
Rob Lowe is one of the lucky ones. The Brothers & Sisters star's home was
one of the many threatened in California's devastating wildfires ~~ and one of
the few that were spared.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor recounts the
terrifying moment when he realized his quiet Montecito neighborhood ~~ and his
family, were in danger.
With just seconds to evacuate, Lowe recalls, "My wife was already out of the
house, so I grabbed my boys and our dogs and that was that."
The actor says 100 homes were lost in his neighborhood alone. He credits a
change in the wind and local firefighters for saving his.
"We had winds blowing away from our home and had an amazing response from the state
and local authorities," he says. "They did a fantastic job when there was no
warning."
ROB LOWE: FLAMES WERE "SHOOTING 200 FEET"
Associated Press
November 14, 2008
MONTECITO, California. (AP) — Rob Lowe says he and his children fled a wildfire
raging in California with just minutes to spare.
The 44-year-old actor said Friday in a telephone interview with local station
KABC-TV that the entire mountain around his Montecito home was on fire and
flames were shooting 200 feet in the air.
The actor says his home was ultimately spared, but as they left, the wind was
blowing at 70 miles an hour and "it was just like Armageddon."
Lowe says he was watching football with his son Thursday night when his wife
called to alert him. He says they didn't see any fire engines or police as they
fled.
A firefighter works in the flames in Montecito, California
Oprah this morning spoke to Rob Lowe on the phone about the "Tea Fire" burning
two miles from her home in Montecito near Santa Barbara. Lowe, who also lives
in the neighborhood, was home last night when the fire began, but knew nothing
of it until his wife called. "This thing came on so fast, you wouldn't believe
it... I walked out [my door] and my jaw just dropped," he explained to Oprah.
He did not smell any smoke because of the wind direction. Lowe helped pry open
the gates at a neighbors house to rescue them. Lowe's house was undamaged when
he spoke to Oprah.
Hollywood actor Rob Lowe told fellow celebrity and Montecito homeowner Oprah
Winfrey on her morning chat show that the flames had arrived suddenly.
"I was watching the football game with my son, and my wife called and said,
'Montecito's on fire -- get out!'," Lowe said. "I thought she was kidding
because there was no indication that there would be any problem whatsoever.
"But we got in the car, pulled out of the driveway and the entire mountain
behind us was flames, 200 feet high shooting up into the air."
Lowe later told the ABC7 network that he had come to the aid of a neighbor
who was unable to escape their property.
"There was literally no warning. It came out of nowhere. It was right on top
of dear friends of mine's homes. I went there to see if I could help and our
friends were trapped behind the gate of their property. They couldn't get
out.
"The wind was 70 miles per hour out there easily. It was like Armageddon. You
couldn't hear yourself think. But we were able to get the gates open and get
out."
Lowe's home was not damaged in the fire but the actor said he remained alert
to the possibility that the wind could change direction.
"We were really, really lucky. The wind which unfortunately drove it towards
my neighbors was blowing in the exact opposite direction to my home.
"So we were okay but it was a long night. Because if the wind shifted it
would have been right on us in two seconds," he said.
"It's dead calm now but if that wind kicks up today it's going to be trouble,
there's going to be no way to stop it." ~~ Associated Press
Lowe said among the evacuating neighbors he saw was filmmaker Ivan Reitman,
director of "Stripes" and "Ghostbusters," and a neighbor with whom he and
Winfrey are mutual friends.
"The next door neighbor's house, they were trapped behind their gates and
could not get out," Lowe said.
"The Simmons could not get out of their gate. Their daughter was lost on the
property and so I had another gentleman and I pried the gates open. ... We tried
to comfort the Simmons, and embers were raining down. They were in our hair,
they were in our shirts. The wind was easily 70 miles an hour and it was
absolutely Armageddon." ~~ Associated Press
Among those who fled with just minutes warning was actor Rob Lowe, who tells a
TV station that he and his children got out as the fire burned the entire
mountain around his home. The home somehow was spared. ~~ Associated Press
Lowe gave a dramatic account of escaping the fire in a phone call to Oprah's
show on Friday.
"My son and I were watching the football game and my wife, who was out
running errands, called and said `Get out, the mountain's on fire,' and I
thought she was kidding," Lowe said.
"I put the kids in the car, turned out of the driveway, and the entire
mountain was on fire with flames shooting 200 feet in the air. There was
literally no warning. This thing came on so fast, you just can't believe it.
I've watched 12 or 13 homes burn to the ground. It's so tragic. It came out
of nowhere," he said. ~~ Associated Press

MY KIDS WON'T BE ACTORS
Associated Press
November 3, 2008
Unlike many proud Hollywood parents, Rob Lowe doesn't think his kids will end
up as future movie stars.
"I think I've squashed any creative juices that might have been flowing in my
children all for academic achievement but we'll see," he said.
Rob and his wife Sheryl have two sons, Matthew Edward, 15 and Johnowen, 13.
"I knew [I wanted to be an actor] at eight-years-old so I figure my kids are
in the clear, as they're 13 and 15," laughed Rob.
"So I think onward and upward to the supreme court, not that I don't have
high aspirations for them!"
The actor was speaking at the Esquire House in Los Angeles, where he was
receiving the Hollywood Legacy Family Award with his brother Chad.
"It's really fun for me because some of the past honourees are people I know
and love really well ~~ the Bridges who are my neighbours, and the Fondas who
I've known for 25 years," he said.
"It's all this weird sort of intermingling of people I love which is
exciting."

Rob and Chad Lowe were honored at the Hollywood Legacy Family Awards XI at the Hollywood
Entertainment Museum on November 1, 2008. The event was held at the Esquire House
in Hollywood Hills, California.
The Hollywood Entertainment Museum honored the Lowe Brothers with the prestigious family
award, which celebrates talented families in the industry as well as those whose
standard of excellence is handed down from one generation to the next.
Talking to Hollyscoop, Rob Lowe said, "One of the great things about getting this
Legacy Award is that the past winners like the Fondas and the Bridges, both of
whom I know and love, have inspired me for years."
He also gave us the scoop about his own legacy. "Well hopefully I have a long time to go
before I start thinking seriously of that question. With that being said, I think for
good work as an actor or producer. For raising a good family and having a normal life despite of all
the craziness that comes with being in the business."
Both Rob and Chad recently worked together as Chad Lowe directed the most recent episode of
Rob's hit show, Brothers and Sisters.

Rob Lowe
ROB LOWE ON SUCCESS, FAILURE,
AND THE JOY OF PLAYING A REAL MAN
By Darren Devlyn heraldsun.com.au
March 5, 2008
Just when you thought his career was all washed up, Rob Lowe has come back with another starring
role in another hit show. What's his secret?
On the eve of its launch last year, critics were lining up to sink the slipper into Brothers
& Sisters.
Given the Channel 7 drama had a less than trauma-free birth, many suspected it would be the train-wreck
show of the year.
The original Brothers & Sisters pilot was flaccid. The plot, revolving around the death of a family
patriarch played by Tom Skerritt, wallowed in misery.
So it was decided the show required a massive rewrite and a bold injection of humour.
Also, stage veteran Betty Buckley was forced to vacate the pivotal role of widow Nora Walker. Two-time Oscar
winner Sally Field was rushed in to play Nora in a new pilot.
And though it can be argued Field is at her dramatic best when she's at the centre of conflict and family
angst, she has also delivered some of the show's great comedic moments.
There is also no doubt it was a dramatic and ratings masterstroke adding former Bratpacker Rob Lowe to the
cast as Senator Robert McAllister, the love interest of Kitty Walker (Calista Flockhart).
Lowe's timing was perfect, entering the scene after producers had ironed out all the show's problems.
Good timing in itself is rare for 43-year-old Lowe, whose decision-making has on occasions sent his career
into a seemingly inexorable downward spiral.
In 1988, Lowe appeared to press the full-flush button on his career when he became embroiled in a scandal
involving a sexually explicit videotape. He sought help for his problems and re-emerged as a clean-cut husband
and father.
Lowe, who shares his life with make-up artist wife Sheryl Berkoff and their sons Matthew and John, has
said of his irrational past behaviour: ‘"When I was young and crazy, I was young and crazy. It can be hard
enough just to be in your teens and 20s. Then add fame, money, access, and every single person telling you
that you're the greatest person who ever was, and it can be a recipe for disaster."
Mike Myers helped resurrect Lowe's career by casting him in Wayne's World, then
Austin Powers:The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Lowe's credibility was truly restored when he played Sam Seaborn in the political drama
The WestWing, but disagreements over salary and dissatisfaction with his profile prompted him
to quit the role.
He then gained the rare distinction of walking away from a critically acclaimed show to working on two duds.
Neither The Lyon's Den nor dr. vegas ran a full season.
Some will argue he made one of his great decision-making blunders in 2005 when he was offered but turned down
Patrick Dempsey's role in Grey's Anatomy.
Reports have suggested Lowe felt as if his world had caved in when Grey's took off and Dempsey, playing
Dr. "McDreamy" Derek Shepherd, became one of the world's hottest stars.
However, when he joins Flockhart on the set of Brothers & Sisters for this interview, Lowe appears to
be torment-free.
He's perfectly coiffured, has a wrinkle-free complexion, and an even tan. If he were to stand frozen for an
extended period, you'd begin to think you were looking at a life-size action figure.
If he'd once beaten himself up over the anguish of shunning the Grey's role, Lowe isn't showing it.
Asked why he's on this set and not on the Seattle Grace (Grey's) one, he says: "Maybe because I'm more
interested in politics than medicine. You know, I never get bored of talking about themes (in
Brothers & Sisters), like what it means to be an American, leadership and ambition.
"I love that stuff, I just love it. I've loved it ever since I was on The West Wing. I'm interested in
what my character has to do every day. And this cast is spectacular. Things always work out the way they were
meant to work out."
Brothers & Sisters, early in its second season, is delivering emotion-charged drama.
Nora's son, Justin (Dave Annable), is back from Iraq and nursing a knee injury, Sarah's (Rachel Griffiths)
marriage has crumbled and Kitty and Robert are trying to run his political campaign and organise their nuptials.
‘"I know I'm planning a wedding, I know that Rob and I are meant to get married . . . whether we actually do,
that's another story," Flockhart says.
What appeals most to Lowe about playing McAllister is that he's the type of character rarely seen on TV. It's
unusual, Lowe explains, to immerse yourself in a character who is highly motivated and driven to career success
but also investing heavily in a monogamous relationship.
"They're just in love. It's a true soulmate match," Lowe says, flashing that white, bright smile.
"You don't see that on television. Television is populated with commitment-phobes, men who don't know what
they want. It's great to play a man. There aren't that many of them on TV. I think people (drama writers) get
caught up in recycling things over and over.
"Even on TV commercials, men are just ineffectual -- sitting around waiting to be told what to do, and kids
are smarter than they are. When they (Brothers & Sisters) came to me and said we want you to play this
guy, a real guy, I said OK, I'm in."
