When your new film is about The Invention of Lying, it's easy enough to spread a few little white lies along the way.
In Toronto to present the new comedy at the international film festival, actor Rob Lowe and his co-star Jennifer Garner shared a
few fibs for the sake of comedy and also took the opportunity to set the record straight at a press conference on Monday afternoon.

"I just want to say categorically, Ben [Affleck] and I are not secretly married," Rob explained after claiming the "horrible, vicious
rumour about me and Ben Affleck" as the worst lie he's ever heard about himself.
"And I would like to say that the rumour that Ben Affleck and I are married is also false," chimed in the smiley brunette beauty,
who married the Good Will Hunting actor in 2005.
British funnyman Ricky Gervais is at the heart of the new film but unlike his co-stars, he was too busy laughing for fibbing.
He added: "It's a joy to make people laugh, but it's not as good as laughing yourself."
Yes, Ricky, perfect.....absolutely perfect
|
His co-star Rob piped in: "If you say something funny, [Ricky] shrieks and then he repeats it. 'He just said monkey!',"
the blue-eyed actor exclaimed in demonstration. "So I like the replay of it."
To which Ricky replied, "I like Rob Lowe shouting monkey."
And as easy as laughing is for the 48-year-old jokester, it's lying which becomes second nature for his character Mark,
after ~~ in a world where you can only tell the truth ~~ he tells a harmless lie, inventing the ability to be dishonest.
Original "Brat Pack" Rob explained how he became involved in the film, believing that after a laughter-filled phone
conversation, he had charmed Ricky into giving him the part. But his bubble burst when Ricky clarified: "We needed a genetically
perfect nemesis," he said, gesturing towards the Brothers & Sisters star, who looks youthful at 45 years of age.
"Look at the jawline, it's ridiculous. It's like someone drew it. It's too sharp ~~ it's perfect!"
|
As for Jennifer's involvement in the film, Ricky credits that to her good manners. "She doesn't swear. I asked her [what] her
favourite swear word [is] and she said 'rats'", he explained.
"That's bologna," the quick-witted mother-of-two quipped back.

LINING UP FOR RICKY
Boston.com
September 26, 2009
Rob Lowe, one of the stars of The Invention of Lying, which opens Friday, couldn’t say enough in favor of Gervais during
the filming. “Ricky has a distinct philosophy on how he wants to shoot. It’s quick, it’s short. He’s got some of the best
people in the world who just knock the ball out of the park. No one’s out there finding their character or struggling."
“Ricky is at that place in his life right now where he’s literally where Woody Allen was right before he made Annie Hall,"
Lowe added. “Everybody wanted to be on this movie. Everybody is on this movie."

ROB GETS BIG LAUGH
ArtVoice.com
September 14, 2009
It takes a lot to score the biggest laugh when Ricky Gervais is in the room, but Rob Lowe managed that feat at the press
conference for The Invention of Lying. Occupying the front row was a geeky-looking fellow wearing what appeared to be a
large bicycle helmet with something that looked like an iPod attached to the top of it. Apparently broadcasting a live
weblog of the proceedings, he explained that he gear was “the Virgin Radio Head Cam.” To which Lowe responded, “Here’s
a word of advice—don’t wear that in public and you won’t be a virgin anymore.”

LYING'S ROB LOWE
DECRIES 'YOU LIE!'
Actor-Advocate Calls Wilson's Outburst 'Utter Disaster'
By Tim Lammers, Staff Writer
WXPI.com
September 14, 2009
As a former staffer on the acclaimed television drama The West Wing and star of the upcoming movie comedy The Invention of Lying,
Rob Lowe has found himself in the unique position to give insight into Sen. Joe Wilson's "You lie!" outburst directed at President Barack Obama
last week.
"I'm a huge believer in decorum," Lowe said in an @ The Movies interview Sunday. "It's one of the things that I brought into my time in
The West Wing and one of the things that I took away for playing Sam Seaborn for many years. I have a great belief in the
pomp and circumstance of government and (the outburst) was a complete and utter disaster."
| |
Wilson sparked a firestorm of controversy Tuesday night when he shouted the comments during the Obama's speech on health care
reform to congress. When the Democratic president said in the speech that illegal immigrants would not be eligible for health
care under his proposed plan, the South Carolina Republican shouted the accusation.
Obama accepted Wilson's apology for the remark.
While perplexed by Wilson's remark, Lowe, a political advocate for years, admitted that he was amused by the reaction of House
Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi's (D.-CA) stunned reaction to the outburst.
"The best thing about the incident was Nancy Pelosi's face. All of the cliché's of bad acting are actually true in life," Lowe
said with a chuckle. "When people are shocked, their mouths do drop open, and when they are really shocked, they gasp. The stuff
bad soap operas are made of actually does happen."
Co-written and co-directed by British funnyman Ricky Gervais, The Invention of Lying takes place in a future world where
everybody tells the truth -- that is, until a film writer, Mark (Gervais), figures out a way to lie. But the lies, and the fame
and fortune that comes with it, have unintended consequences.
Lowe plays Brad, a dapper fellow writer who antagonizes Mark with his brutal yet truthful comments.
The veteran actor said he reveled in the freshness of The Invention of Lying script, which has become even more poignant now
that a politician has actually accused another of lying in a highly visible arena.
"Not to say that anybody's a liar -- but politicians have been known to bend veracity from time to time on both sides of the
aisle," Lowe quipped.
Also starring Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill, Jeffrey Tambor and Tina Fey, The Invention of Lying opens in theaters
nationwide October 2, 2009.

After poking around at various kinds of lying the cast members might allow (nice lies), someone asked about Kanye West's recent
"fit of honesty" at Sunday night's MTV awards, when he grabbed the microphone from best female video winner, Taylor Swift, and
said Beyoncé should have had the award instead.
"Did you say, 'Fit of publicity'?" asked Lowe. "I didn't quite catch that."

ROB LOWE JOINS GARNER AND GERVAIS
IN THIS SIDE OF TRUTH
TheMovieBlog.com
February 4, 2008
It looks like This Side Of Truth has landed another stellar thespian. Rob Lowe will be joining the
project and we get the outstanding news from the professionals at Variety.
A story about a man that invents lying is a brilliant idea, especially in the
context of writing history. In order to save his job, he alters history books -
that is a blank check for hilarious. I am interested in seeing how ridiculous
the historical rewrites will be, and how he gets caught, because lying up to
this point - never existed.
Rob Lowe is a fantastic choice for a spectrum of roles, comedy being one of
them. He was great in everything from Wayne’s World to Thank You For Smoking and
it will be a treat to see him work alongside Gervais. I am wondering if he will
play a boss character or a moral investigator trying to make sense of this new
paradigm of the fib. Either way, Lowe is a welcome addition to the cast and
should be nothing short of delightful.
This film is scheduled for a 2009 release and we will be sure to keep you
posted on the progress!
LOWE SEEKS TRUTH AT WB
Actor Joins Gervais, Garner in Comedy
By Michael Fleming
Variety
January 3, 2008
Rob Lowe has been set to star with Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner in This Side of the Truth, a comedy
Gervais and Matt Robinson wrote together and will co-direct.
|
The picture was set up as part of the Media Rights Capital slate; MRC made a
distribution deal with Warner Bros. The film will be produced by Lynda Obst and Oly Obst. Shooting begins in
the spring.
The comedy takes place in a world where everybody tells the truth. Gervais
plays a storyteller whose job is to ramble on about the 1300s. Faced with losing
his job because his terrain is a boring period in history once he gets beyond
the Black Death, he invents lying as a way to save himself. Lowe will play his
arch nemesis.

Lowe stars in the ABC series Brothers & Sisters. His company,
LoweProfile, has set two projects at ABC Studios, a crime drama and a
relationship-based reality series.
RICKY'S BLOG

Gervais, 46, writes on his movie
blog:
Did some really funny scenes today with Rob Lowe, Tina Fey, and the great Jeffrey Tambor.
Lunch time I had chicken and mash and introduced Rob and Tina to the joys of Nerf guns.
Warner Brothers saw
this blog and sent some of the most incredible Nerf weaponry in the world. One
gun fires six darts at once and has a rocket launcher.
"It soon got out of hand and in one particular
stand-off I shot West Wing star and Hollywood hunk Lowe in the eye,"
says Gervais, who also co-directs the movie. "He was fine but it made me think
how embarrassing it would be to have to phone up Warner Brothers and explain
that the film is delayed because the director blinded one of the stars while
'having a laugh.' "
The solution: 'I made a rule that everyone had to wear sunglasses," says Gervais.
The British funnyman says that after the
shootout, "I sweated for the first few takes" but it "did not affect my
performance. It didn't affect anything. I always look a bit sweaty."
"At least," he adds, "my right eye wasn't bloodshot like that loser Lowe."
Lowe wanted more punishment.
We are about the same age but as you can see Rob has let himself go a bit.
We were about to do a duel here until someone said we had to walk a whole 10 paces.
I got my assistant to drive me.

GERVAIS: I NEARLY BLINDED ROB LOWE
Beth Hilton, Entertainment Reporter
April 28, 2008
"Gervais: 'I nearly blinded Rob Lowe' "
Ricky Gervais has admitted that he accidentally hit co-star Rob Lowe in the eye with a
toy gun on the set of their new movie.
The comedian shot Lowe with a foam
dart during a play-fight while filming feature directorial debut This Side
of The Truth.
He wrote on his blog: "I showed Rob the joy of [toy]
Nerf guns. Warner [studio] sent us some incredible weaponry.
"One fires
six darts at once and one has a rocket launcher. It soon got out of hand and in
one particular stand-off I shot West Wing star and Hollywood hunk Lowe
in the eye.
"
He was fine, but it would have been embarrassing to have had
to tell Warner that the film is delayed because the director blinded one of the
stars while 'having a laugh'."
Gervais added: "It did not affect my
performance. At least my eye wasn't blood-shot like that loser Lowe."
